Gresham Smith-Designed Healthcare Facility Honored by AIA Middle Tennessee

Kaiser Permanente Haymarket Crossroads Medical Center Celebrated for Design Excellence

Gresham Smith is proud to announce that the firm has received a Citation Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Middle Tennessee chapter for the design of Kaiser Permanente’s Haymarket Crossroads Medical Center in Haymarket, Virginia.

“This project is a testament to our team’s commitment to delivering tailored solutions that support better health outcomes. This project presented interesting challenges, from the site constraints to the building’s preliminary façade design,” said Gresham Smith Project Executive Adam Smith, AIA, LEED AP. “I’m proud that our design solution has been recognized by AIA Middle Tennessee for their innovative answer to our client’s needs.”

Kaiser Permanente’s 38,000-square-foot medical office building walks a delicate tightrope between historic and modern, using a brick façade to fit the neighborhood’s context and large expanses of glazing to reflect the healthcare organization’s dynamic brand. While the building’s pre-determined orientation proved a challenge, the design team strategically located the main lobby, windows and solar shades to maximize daylight and views while reducing the building’s overall energy consumption by 3%. Inside, the optical center, pharmacy, imaging and laboratory are easily accessible from the main concourse, while a monumental stair encourages physical activity and connects patients to the primary care, behavioral health, and obstetrics and gynecology clinics on the second floor. A standardized clinic design encourages collaborative care, and demountable walls, doors and desks provide flexibility for the future.

The AIA’s Annual Design Awards Program strives to recognize projects that represent the best of Middle Tennessee architecture; projects that are exemplary for their thoughtful, sustainable, innovative, and well-crafted design. With juries composed of highly-qualified professionals offering diverse perspectives and expertise, all submissions are reviewed in the context of the project team’s goals and evaluated for thoughtfully designed resolution of those goals.
