Delivering value in health care now requires more than clinical excellence; it demands environments that reduce barriers, build trust and reflect the realities of the communities they serve. Evidence‑based design (EBD) guided by social determinants of health (SDOH) insights offers a clear path toward more flexible, inclusive and high–impact care settings.
Dagmar Bachmann, MID, CKBD, Healthcare Design Researcher, and Tatiana Orozco, PhD, Healthcare Research & Data Analyst, of Gresham Smith spoke with Becker’s Hospital Review about how using community data, lived experience, and real-world evidence leads to facilities that truly meet community needs. They highlighted practical strategies such as creating flexible, accessible spaces, co‑locating medical and social services, improving wayfinding and designing welcoming, non‑institutional environments that build trust and support meaningful engagement.
